Spring Journey to Port Aransas

You can’t go wrong when you plan a relaxing and fun getaway to Port Aransas any time of year. However, there’s something exceptionally inviting about spring in Port Aransas when the weather is beautiful, summer crowds haven’t yet made their way into town, and you have options to leave your cares far behind. Whether you’re one for the sand, the sun, or the surf, you’ll find the best of it all here in the spring and daily highs typically linger in the 70s in March and April, while booting up into the low 80s by May. Evening lows typically only get into the 60 and 70s as well, making spring a picture-perfect time of year for a one-of-a-kind trip to Texas.

Day 1: Make Time for a Guided Beach Walk

Getting out on the sand and enjoying the views and water is a must when you make your way to Port Aransas in the springtime. If you’re looking for a fun first-day activity that you and your entire traveling crew can enjoy together, be sure to participate in a guided beach walk while you’re in town. These are hosted on the first Friday of every month in the spring from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. Simply make your way to Horace Caldwell Pier where you’ll meet up with your knowledgeable and friendly guide Julie Findley. This Texas Master Naturalist is ready and waiting to lead you on a beach excursion that provides insight into the terrain, local wildlife, and even more about the treasures that might wash up on shore here throughout the year. There’s absolutely no cost to attend this springtime guided beach tour. Simply bring yourself and your sense of adventure for what’s bound to be a highlight of your stay.

Day 2: Enjoy Time Birding on the Boardwalk

Port Aransas is a year-round hub of fantastic opportunities for birding enthusiasts, but spring brings about even more in the way of options for setting your sights on some incredible species with binoculars in hand. When you’re here at this time of year, you’ll want to dedicate the second day of your stay to a birding adventure on the boardwalk at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in town. This is a prime observation area in Port Aransas for winged creatures of all kinds as well as alligators and fish throughout the year. The 700-foot boardwalk lends itself perfectly to extensive views out over the freshwater marshland, where a plethora of avian species thrives. Some of the birds visitors are highly likely to spot during a visit here include herons, shorebirds, cormorants, egrets, pelicans, and ducks to name a few of many. You’ll find the birding center just down the street from the Community Park and it offers up a chance to stroll through gorgeous pollinator gardens while you’re on-site too. When you’re bird watching from the boardwalks, you’ll have easy access to spotting scopes, benches, and shaded observation spaces to enjoy. The birding center is open from sunrise to sunset daily and is free to visit. If you’re looking for a more guided birding experience here, you can participate in a Birding on the Boardwalk group event which is held on Wednesdays in the spring starting at 9:00 am. Meet up with others who have a shared passion and walk along the boardwalk with a guide who will point out interesting species and habitats you might otherwise overlook. If you don’t have binoculars of your own, they’re available on loan for these guided excursions.
