Vacations can be so expensive, but when you are planning a Spring Break in Port Aransas and a stay in our La Mirage seasonal sanctuaries, there are ways to play that won’t cost you anything, or at the very least will be extremely affordable. Budgets can be tight, life can throw expensive surprises at you, and you may have even thought about skipping the fun, but we’ve got you. We’ve put together this list of free and affordable things to do in Port Aransas.
Free and Affordable Things to Do in Port Aransas
The temperature will be just right for lazing on a beach chair, letting the sun heat up your bones that have been chilled for too long. Winter in your hometown is still rearing its ugly head, but in Port Aransas, his sassy sister spring is making her presence known. Best of all, a day at the beach doesn’t cost a thing to walk along shore’s edge feeling sea breezes kissing your cheeks, and it costs nothing to take a nap on the section of beach you have claimed for your own. You can even bring a cooler of sandwiches and beverages that you prepared at home, so lunch won’t cost you extra either. Serenity, relaxation, and a cool new do courtesy of those sea breezes not some expensive stylist, all can be yours for absolutely nothing and we don’t think you will have any complaints
about that.
Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, 1356 Ross Avenue
The variety of birds that make this part of Texas home has birders from all over the world flocking to our doorstep and then making their way to the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center. Free admission will bring you to two boardwalks that cross over the wetlands, providing a comfortable place to hike and keep your eyes on the sky. This used to be a shorter walk, but now that one of the boardwalks is connected to the Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture South Trail, you can spend even more time walking, watching for birds, and falling in love with the natural side of Port Aransas. Also offering binoculars for loan (no cost) as long as their selection lasts, the birding center is open from sunrise to sunset every day.
Your Catch of the Day
Fishing can be prohibitively expensive when you choose to hire a charter, but it can also be an inexpensive and affordable way to have some fun. Fishing from the Horace Caldwell Pier will cost just $3 per person if you brought your own pole and $4 per pole if you choose to rent. You will need a fishing license, of course, costing on average around $60 depending on the license you purchase, but in our books you are angling for fun for under $100. If you are successful, dinner grilled on the barbecue at your La Mirage escape is free, saving you even more.
Roberts Point Park, 301 JC Barr Boulevard
If you follow us at all, you have probably heard us mention Roberts Point Park more than a few times over the years. The center of all holiday celebrations, the park, when not hosting holiday events, is free and offers picnic tables, a playground that is scheduled to be finished this month, and the Patsy Jones Amphitheater which offers free concerts the second Friday of each month, beginning in March (how convenient for our Spring Breakers!) and continuing through October. One of our favorite parts of the park, however, is the observation tower that overlooks the shipping channel, giving visitors the opportunity to watch ships, dolphins, or just the sun setting over the sea.
Restaurant San Juan, 410 Cutoff Road
Your La Mirage retreat does come with a fully equipped kitchen that can help you save money, but the restaurants of Port A do deserve to be explored, with Restaurant San Juan providing an inexpensive, authentic Mexican meal that will add a little spice to your travels! Happy Hour deals can include $3.99 margaritas, and because their portion sizes are so large, you can split a meal with your favorite traveling companion, or bring it home to enjoy later, squeezing two meals out of one low price!
Affordable, Comfortable, and Waiting to Welcome You with Open Arms
The costs of our La Mirage vacation rentals may surprise you with their affordability, especially when you see all the amenities that await you. Community pools, hot tubs, and barbecue areas may just entice you to stay home and play, and yes, our fully equipped kitchens will save you money on dining out. State of the art televisions may offer supersized screens, making a movie night almost feel as if you are at the theater and deep soaking tubs in the bathrooms will help you find the right note for falling asleep easy. Let’s take a minute to pick apart a very popular phrase, the phrase that tells us the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. We at La Mirage know it is supposed to mean you can make a man fall in love with you faster by cooking a good meal, but we don’t think men are that shallow, and we do know that every relationship is enhanced by enjoying those good meals, which is why we have created this guide to the top restaurants for a Valentine’s Day dinner in Port Aransas, leading you on a romantic epicurean tour of our island town and ensuring that your Texas holiday journey is one you will never forget!
Top Restaurants for a Valentine’s Day Dinner in Port Aransas
Valentine’s Day 2025 falls on a Friday this year, so if you are planning on an actual Valentine’s Day date night, our first spot on our list, Venetian Hot Plate, is open for business. Italian food is the language of love and the classic Italian dishes served here are fluent in the romance languages, featuring meals that hail from the owner’s home town of Venice. Yes, the menu is truly authentic, rich, flavorful, and created with love, ensuring that your holiday dinner will be a memorable one. And yes, as always, even in an Italian restaurant known for generous portions, we are going to suggest that you save room for dessert, especially their Death by Chocolate cake, as we believe that no romantic celebration is complete without a taste of chocolate!
Roosevelt’s, 200 E Cotter Avenue, Open Daily at 5 PM
Every relationship deserves a fine dining experience during Valentine’s Day, and Roosevelt’s, next on our list of recommendations, will definitely give you that experience. Offering a menu filled with steak and seafood options, this is the perfect spot to sample the sweet and delicate taste of local seafood, including our personal favorite dish, their Seared Scallops & Shrimp, created with the title ingredients and grilled to perfection. For a new twist on a traditional meal, their grilled quail could have come straight out of scene from your favorite Victorian movie, fitting in perfectly with their 1886 bar! Sticking with the chocolate theme for dessert, we suggest their white chocolate bread pudding but if you want to step outside the cocoa box, you can’t go wrong with Roosevelt’s Signature Key Limon Pie.
Virginia’s on the Bay, 815 Trout Street, Open Daily at 11 AM
So far, we have only discussed dinner restaurants, but Valentine’s Day lasts an entire DAY, so what if you also want a romantic lunch? Virginia’s on the Bay offers water views, a land and sea lover’s menu, and best of all, reasonable prices that will fit into most vacation budgets! If you do decide to head to Virginia’s for dinner, sunset is at 6:19 PM on February 14th, so you will definitely want to time your romantic meal with the setting of the sun, even if it is a little early. You can always linger over their Chocolate & Coconut Gooey Louie if you want to extend your time sitting Gulf side with your sweetie.
Lisabella’s Bistro & Bar, 5009 TX-361, Open Daily at 5:30, Closed Mondays
Although Valentine’s Day is for lovers, parents know all too well that they can’t always get away from the kiddos, and if your tiniest travelers are along for the ride (or even if they aren’t), Lisabella’s Bistro & Bar is destined to be the ideal spot for a romantic family dinner. Offering a large yard furnished with cornhole games and providing plenty of space for running out the wiggles, even if you have to wait a bit, reservations are highly recommended, your cherished angels will stay well occupied. The menu is a classic American one, although we can’t get enough of their Seafood Enchiladas, and our dessert recommendation? Homemade Hallelujah Chocolate Cake, made from a secret family recipe!
Romance Begins at Home with La Mirage
The most romantic meal may not be lunch or dinner, and it may not be held at a local restaurant. Breakfast in bed is destined to make your Valentine realize how much she is loved, letting her sleep in while you putter around the kitchen getting the essentials together. A bottle of champagne and her favorite juice is highly recommended, as mimosas of all flavors will enhance any dining experience. If you aren’t handy in the kitchen, however, or you both want to enjoy a breakfast in bed experience, Door Dash is available in Port Aransas and pretty much any meal you desire can be delivered to your doorstep; you don’t even have to answer the door and talk to the delivery person, so don’t worry about getting dressed for the occasion. Have you been dreaming of a journey to Port Aransas but just haven’t sat down at your computer to begin the planning as of yet? Normally, procrastination is not a great thing, but a special event is happening on February 5th, an event that will potentially save you money as it helps you start planning a Texas adventure that will never be forgotten. Book Direct Day is on February 5th, and we at La Mirage Resort Condominiums have created this guide to all the reasons why you should book direct from us!
Book Direct Day is February 5th!
Stimulating the economy starts with shopping local, and La Mirage is a local company with staff that work, live, and play in the same places you will stay and play. (We hope you don’t have to work while you’re here, but high-speed internet will ensure that you can!) One of the first things you may notice is that Port Aransas really isn’t that big; we’re a small barrier offering just 12 square miles of land. We still manage to provide a fantastic selection of local restaurants, shops, and attractions, and we can continue doing so with a little help from travelers like you, shopping local and keeping the money circulating, creating a circle that ensures the businesses you frequent, including ours, can keep hiring people who can continue the important business of keeping the economy stimulated.
Flexibility Isn’t Just for Gymnastics
Life happens, and schedules aren’t always going to be adhered to, but the rules and regulations imposed by those third-party platforms remain rigid, no matter how inconvenient it can be to their guests. We understand that planes are late and that things happen, and if you have booked directly from La Mirage, all you need to do is contact us and we can work together to come up with some kind of solution to your problem. Flexibility is just one of our middle names (comfort, stylish, and welcoming are some others), and your satisfaction is of utmost importance to us, sometimes even outweighing the importance factor of rules.
Personally Yours
If you have ever lived in a small town or have done business with an establishment from a small town, you might have been surprised by the personal touches that accompany your business. Small town businesses get to know you, get to understand your likes and dislikes, and will get the job done, but often with a lot of “How ya doin’, hon?” or “Can we get you another glass of sweet tea?” tossed in for good measure. That personal touch is another reason you will want to book directly with us, and although we may not have a lot of contact, we will always be here to provide direction should you need it. Where’s the best restaurant for an anniversary dinner? Which sunset cruise provides the best services? What is the one thing a first time visitor should see when visiting Port Aransas? All of these questions and so many more can be easily answered with a phone call, a text, or by reading through our blogs, and that isn’t a service you can expect from those companies with all those initials in their names.
Spend Less for More
If you were to continue to frequent those other big-name third-party platforms, you already know about the extra fees that accompany the “privilege” of using their sites, but did you know that you are also missing out on some great deals when you don’t book direct from the source? Last-minute bargains on unrented properties, seasonal sales, exclusive package deals—all of these can be found when you let your fingers scroll their way to our website. And with the money you save, you can put it to use in trying out a fancy restaurant, extending your vacation an extra day, or maybe buying that cute new swimsuit that you talked yourself out of because it was a little pricey for your budget. Who knew that booking direct on February 5th could do all of this for you? We did, of course, and we are happy to share the knowledge with you!
La Mirage Welcomes You
Saving money, personal service, flexibility, and stimulating the economy—is there a downside to booking direct? Other than the realization that you could have been doing it all along, we can’t think of a thing! Book your relaxing Texas sanctuary direct from us on February 5th and prepare for a vacation you will never forget. Oh, and one more thing. You really can book direct every day of the year! Contact us to book your stay today. Browse our rentals by bedroom here.

One of the best parts of being an adult is getting to choose where you want your next vacation to take place and not be at the mercy of your parents who have historically made the decision for you. And one of the worst parts of being an adult is having to pay for everything yourself, with one of your worst vacation memories being the time you went to Paris and ran out of money before you got to take the Eifel Tower tour. Fortunately, the fact that you are reading this proves to us that you have learned from your mistakes, turning to La Mirage and this guide to budgeting for your 2025 vacation to Port Aransas so that you can fully enjoy your Texas trip of a lifetime with no sacrifices!
Budgeting for Your 2025 Vacation to Port Aransas
Remember that time you forgot to pack any dark socks for the trip you made for your stepdad’s funeral? Life is funny like that, and we often forget the little things and that includes parking costs for your day at the beaches of Port Aransas. The good news is that your La Mirage beachy escape is close enough to the beach that you won’t need to drive, but if you visit beaches beyond the one outside your window, there is an annual parking fee of $12 that you will need to pay. Additionally, you may need to rent beach gear (some of our sanctuaries may offer the equipment as well, so that could be another savings), and if you want to learn to surf, well, that will cost you as well. Texas Surf Camps, 230 N On the Beach, offers a selection of surfing lessons beginning at $60 per person, so be sure to add that fee to your budget if you think you would like to hang 10 during your Port A journey.
Dining Out can be a Budget Buster
Again, because you have chosen La Mirage and our escapes offer fully equipped kitchens, you can lessen the burden on your budget by choosing to eat in for some meals, but the culinary landscape of Port Aransas is one that deserves to be explored. Most restaurants in the area run in the $10-$20 range, making dining out reasonable, but there are a few spots that will force you to dig deeper. Roosevelts, 200 E Cotter Avenue, is the first restaurant that comes to mind, offering a fine dining experience with elevated food choices. Because life is too short to always eat cheap, if you are celebrating a special occasion, we will always recommend Roosevelts, but remember that you can expect to spend between $50-$100 for your meals here.
Catch Your Dinner
Fishing is a popular Port Aransas activity, we are even known as the Fishing Capital of Texas, but there will be some expenses involved if you choose to participate in this activity. Fishing licenses are required and can cost $16 per person for an all water license. If you want to fish from the Horace Caldwell Pier, it will cost $7 per person; $3 for access and $4 for the pole (children are free and seniors and military can access the pier for just $1). Until now, the costs have been minor ones, but if you want to charter a fishing expedition, you can expect those costs to grow exponentially. Bay fishing trips can start at $54 per person for a 3.5-hour one when you choose Deep Sea Headquarters for your fishing expeditions, but if you want a real adventure, they offer charters that can last as long as 60 hours, where the costs will jump into the thousand-dollar range. A steep cost, of course, but the adventure will be one you will never forget!
Don’t Walk the Plank
It can be difficult to find things the youngest travelers enjoy while on vacation, but in Port Aransas, Red Dragon Pirate Cruises is destined to change that, if you budget for it! Offering a fantastic adventure aboard a Spanish Galleon replica, there will be cannon fire, sword fighting, a lesson in speaking pirate, and the chance to find hidden treasure, with a full bar on board ensuring that the parents will have a blast as well. Ticket prices are $40 for adults, $30 for children, and if your kiddos are 2 or under, they can board for free. This swashbuckling adventure will bring your entire family the best memories, and on the best trips, the opportunity to watch dolphins frolicking in the surf as well.
Less Expensive Than a Hotel?
Although our La Mirage retreats offer a variety of costs, depending on the size, location, and the views, it can still be less costly than renting a hotel room, especially when you choose to dine in for a few meals.
